Prior to joining the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix, Burns served as Director of Security for the Indy Car Series since 2003. In this role he was responsible for the security for all league operations, including drivers, team and league officials and race track security for all Indy Car Series events both domestic and international, with the crown jewel being the Indianapolis 500.
Before he joined the Indy Car Series, Burns spent 10 years with the Indiana State Police (ISP). Burns began his career with the ISP as a road trooper and was then assigned to the Governor’s Security Detail for Governor Evan Bayh and Governor Frank O’Bannon.
Burns currently serves on the advisory board for the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security, the sports league sub-council under the DHS critical infrastructure group and is a member of the Overseas Security Advisory Council. He also sits on the board of the Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau and the MotorCities National Heritage Area.
